This indispensable edition of the Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent has both the original Latin and facing English translations of these texts.
First summoned in 1545 by Pope Paul III to confront the heresies of the Protestant Reformation, the Council of Trent faced incredible obstacles and challenges before it concluded in 1563. Its Canons and Decrees can be considered as forming no less than the greatest and most authoritative presentation of Catholic doctrine ever produced. Its dogmatic decrees cover: the Holy Scriptures, Original Sin, Justification, the seven Sacraments in general and in particular, Holy Communion, the Mass, Purgatory and the Veneration of Saints and Images. The necessity of these documents to the religious education of every Catholic cannot be overstressed.
The English translation is by Fr. Henry Joseph Schroeder OP (1875 – 1942), a world-renowned authority on the Ecumenical Councils and, at the time of his death, professor at the Dominican House of Studies in River Forest, Illinois.
